Ala-ud-din-Khilji, the first Khilji Sultan of India wanted Ala-i-Minar to be twice as high as Qutab Minar. Set on a plinth, it rises 87 feet above the ground but was intended to reach 500 feet - twice as high as Qutub Minar.
But the construction was abandoned soon after the first story(24.5m) was built after Sultan's death.
