Overview 

This sacred city was the capital of Sri Lanka from 4th - 11th century AD. It is a very valuable archaeological site and is now a World Heritage Site. In 3rd century BC, Sanghamitta (founder of the order of Buddhist nuns) brought a branch of the Bodhi Tree (Buddha's fig tree) to Sri Lanka. Anuradhapura spreads around this Bodhi Tree. It is a major pilgrimage for Buddhist from all over the world. There are 8 places of veneration in the city known by the name 'the Atamasthana'.
