Dharan Bazar is a serene and beautiful mid-sized town located in the foothills of the Mahabharata range. It can be said to be the last hill town before one hits the terai (plains) region towards Itahari and Biratnagar. It has many tourist attractions, many of which lie in the villages around the town.

Dharan is famous for its Shaivite (related to Hindu God Shiva) temples, and is said to contain the place where the body of Shiva's first wife Dakshayani fell after she committed 'Sati' trying to upkeep Shiva's honour. Dharan is thus marked as one of the 51 'Shakti Peeths'(Dakshayani's body parts fell at 51 places, it is said), making it a place of pilgrimage for many followers of the Hindu religion. Most of the important Shaivite temples are situated in the northeast of the centre in the village of Bijayapur. You can hire an auto to reach Bijaypur.

The place is also famous for blacksmiths and metal works, and for being a neat and clean place in general.
