Elephant Stable, one of the well preserved structures at Hampi, can be accessed from Zenana’s Enclosure. This elongated symmetric building has 11 compartments for ‘parking’ elephants. The middle compartment is more elaborately decorated and has an upper storey, which probably housed a Hindu temple. The 5 compartments on either side of main compartment have dome shaped roofs, built in Islamic style. Some of these compartments are connected to each other and metal hooks are seen inside to tie up the elephants. The elephant stable is thought to have been a ground for conducting elephant procession during ceremonies.
