The rock temple was built by Parakramabahu in 12th century AD. There are four images of Buddha carved on a granite rock. The images in the shrine consist of large seated Buddha (4.6 m), small seated Buddha in an artificial cave (1.4 m), standing figure (6.9 m) and a reclining Buddha (14.12 m). These are the best examples of the carving and sculpture art of Sri Lanka.
