Since 1988, the old town of Galle and its fort are a World Heritage Site. The entire town lives inside the walls of the Dutch fort. It was the first commecial and international trading hub of Sri Lanka. It reflects its history through its building that carry impressions of every single rule it has been under. The European architecture is quite prominent. The complex houses in its premises, a lighthouse, museums, churches, mosques, clock tower and shops. Galle is also famous for its handmade laces and gems polishing. It was largely effected by the Tsunami in 2004 and all efforts are being made to restore it to its former beauty.
