Gulmarg was formerly named as ‘Gaurimarg’, by shepherds who lived here. Situated 50 km from Srinagar, Gulmarg is a beautiful hill resort apart from Pahalgam and Sonamarg in Kashmir and is a world-famous tourist spot. The present name, ‘Gulmarg’ was given by Sultan Yousuf Shah in the 16th century.
The road to Gulmarg is abundant in Poplar trees, vast stretches of rice fields, dense flower meadows, snow capped mountains and tiny villages amidst appear the scene. It was the most favorite pleasantry of Emperor Jehangir, who once collected flowers of 21 different types from here. The color of meadows changes with seasons from lush green to emerald to golden and scarlet. Gulmarg’s famousness arises from the fact that the world’s highest golf course is situated here at a height of 2,650 m. A number of snow games are very popular in Gulmarg including skiing and trekking. On the way, amidst Fir tree covered roads, a spot called ‘View Point’ presents a combination of mountains, valleys and flower beds laden in snow. The Gondola or cabin lifting passengers high in the air and traveling through a long distance, serves as a tourist enchantment. A number of pony and horse rides are also available to make the journey to Gulmarg exciting.
1.All foreign visitors should report and register themselves at the "Foreigners Regional Registration Office" at the airport.
2.Do have an experience of hiking, horse riding, cable car ride, golf and snow skiing. You will love every bit of it.
