Guwahati, is located on the banks of River Brahmaputra. Its' more than 20 centuries old and is the largest city in North East India. The name Guwahati is made of two assamese words 'Guwa' meaning 'nut' and 'hat' meaning a marketplace. In the past Guwahati used to be the capital of Kamrup kings and was known as 'Pragjyotishpura' (the light of east). There aren't many places of tourist interest in Guwahati, but the city is ideal to arrange for any tours in North East India. Most tourists traveling to Kaziranga National Park, usually make their arrangement or pass through the hot and humid city of Guwahati.
Dispur, the administrative capital of Assam, is located about 7km from Guwahati.
