Hemakuta hills in Hampi, house a large number of temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. These are collectively called as ‘Hemakuta Hill Temple Complex’. Legend has it that Lord Shiva resorted to penance before expressing his will to marry a local girl named Pampa, as he was impressed by her devotion for him. ‘Kama’, the God of Lust distracted Lord Shiva from his penance, by showering ‘Rain of Gold’ or ‘Hema’ in this hill. Shiva killed Kama with his third eye (fire), for distracting him from his penance. The most famous temple in this complex is ‘Virupaksha Temple’ dedicated to Lord Shiva. The peak of Hemakuta Hills can be reached within 15 minutes, by climbing. The rocky hills are a popular spot for viewing sunrise and sunset at Hampi and there are no fees for entry and photography.
