Jaisalmer lies amidst the sands of famous Thar Desert and is called as \'The Golden City\'. A major part of the city is covered by Jaisalmer fort, built in golden sandstone on Trikuta Hills. The sand gleams in gold and honey shades during sunrise and sunset, and hence the name \'Golden City\'.
The city of Jailsalmer is also an important tourist attraction owing to the beautiful Jaisalmer fort, Havelis, lakes and temples. Jaisalmer fort came into existence in 1156 and was used for fighting many battles. The activities in this fort were the main theme of famous Indian writer, Satyajit Ray in his book – \'Sonar Qila\'. Attractions inside the fort include Raj Mahal, Laxminath Temple and several small Jain shrines. Majestic and architecturally rich Havelis were constructed in Jaisalmer by rich tradesmen. These include: Patwon-ki-Haveli, Salim Singh-Ki-Haveli, Mehra Haveli and Nathmalji-Ki-Haveli. These apart, Desert Culture Centre and Museum, Government Museum, Jaisalmer Folklore Museum and Gadisar Lake are famous tourist attractions. Camel rides and famous \'Sam Sand Dunes\' form a unique spectacle of Thar Desert. The city of Jaisalmer comes to life during the \'Desert Festival\' which is a display of Jaisalmer\'s songs, art and music.
