Original structure, built by King Mahasena, was one of the tallest structures in the ancient world. Due to the damage, it no longer holds the record. Though in volume it is still the largest in the world. Belonging to the Sagalika sect, stupa holds significance as it reflects the tension between the Theravada and Mahayana sects of Buddhist monks. Located at the Jetavana monastery, it is known for housing the sash or belt tied by Buddha.
