The Kalatop Sanctuary stretches over a beautiful meadow surrounded by Deodar trees on all sides and a view of the Pir Panjal Range. The sanctuary is situated between the slopes of Khajjiar and Dalhousie in the Chamba District. and spreads over an area of 1962 hectares.
The vegetation of the sanctuary consists of Deodar, Oak and Blue Pine trees along with dense undergrowth. The sanctuary also boasts of a rich wildlife which includes, Himalayan Black Martens, Himalayan Bears, Leopards, Barking Gorals, Deers, Squirrels, Jackals, Serows and Langurs. It is not advisable to visit the Sanctuary without a trained guide and after dusk as the Himalayan Bears very often infringe on the surrounding villages.
The temperature here ranges from 12°C to 33°C. The Sanctuary can be reached via Pathankot (86 kms) which is the closest railway station. The best way to explore the site is by taking a three day trek from Dalhousie to Kalatop (8000 feet above sea level and a secluded forest), Khajjiar and back.
