Kalutara is majorly a beach town, with multiple unexplored beaches at the northern end of the city. During the Dutch and Portuguese era, this was a spice trading port, where one could see the spice gardens being connected with canals. Spice plantations were long replaced by rubber plantations. Now one sees coconut fibre articrafts like mats, baskets, etc. When in Kalutara one should try the purple shiny local fruit called Mangosteen. It has a tart flavour and the best season to enjoy them is June. Another feature of the city is the Kalutara Bridge, which is 38meters long and connects the western - southern borders.
