Kargil is an Indian District in the Ladakh Region of Jammu and Kashmir. Zanskar, Dras and Suru valleys are a part of the Kargil District. The region is bound by Pakistan Occupied Kashmir to its west and the Kashmir Valley to the east. The area has seen many battles between India and Pakistan and has been in India since the war of 1971.
The area is nestled in the Himalayas and experiences extremely cold winters and at times temperatures plummet to -40 degrees. Summers are warm during days and cold during nights. The area lies on the main Leh-Srinagar Highway and is 120km from Srinagar.
