This area was designated as a National park in 2002 and the Birdlife International has recognized it as an Important Bird area. The Kaudulla tank attracts a lot of animals and safari in the park and provides a perfect opprtunity to watch the animals closely. There are 250 elephants in the park along with fishing cats, leopard, endangered rusty spotted cats, sambar deer and reptiles.
