Kurunegala is a sleepy little town that lies in between Kandy, Colombo and the North Western destinations. There are some beautiful places around and away from the town, the town itself not being much to talk of, except probably the fact that during the 13th century, it was the ancient capital of Sri Lanka for 50years.
This city is dominated by the eight rock outcrops which surround it. Out of this six are believed to be in shape of animals. The city has also got its name from one of rocks, Elephant rock; especially its ancient name Hasthishaila-pura literally translates as the city of the Elephant Rock.
