Matara, originally named Mahathota, was the land where the Aryans settled when they first arrived in Sri Lanka. It is rich in Sinhalese literature and city's structures showcase the Dutch & Portuguese era influence. Nilwala river passes through the town and it very important to the region. Matara was also one of the cities that were majorly effected by the 2004 tsunami.
