Built in 1640 by the Dutch, it was constructed to fortify the Portuguese garrison. The Dutch church is the oldest structure in Matara and it is located within the fort. The Star fort is also within the Matara fort, it is in the shape of a Star. The buildings within the fort have gone under a lot of changes over the ages. The moat around the fort has been restored and the drawbridge has been constructed.
