Built between 1617 and 1694, Mecca Masjid is the oldest and largest mosque in Hyderabad. It’s construction continued during the reign of Sultan Muhammad Qutub Shah, Abdullah Qutub Shah, Tana Shah and Aurangazeb in Hyderabad. Mecca Masjid exemplifies rich Islamic architecture in design, which occupied 8000 architects and 77 years for completion. Stone bricks from the holy city of Mecca have been laid out in the entrance arch of the Masjid, giving it the name Mecca Masjid. The massive 67 m wide and 55 m long hall accommodates 10,000 devotees at any given time. On the 15 arches and several monolithic granite pillars of the hall are inscribed, quotes from the Holy Quran. The large pond with slabs is attributed with the feature of ensuring revisit of a person who sits on it, to Hyderabad. Mecca Masjid is at a distance of 100 yards from Charminar. Chowmalla Palace and Laad Bazaar are nearby places of attraction.
