When Buddha visited Sri Lanka for the third time during the eigth year of attaining enlightenment, he was invited by Deva King Indaka to visit Badulla. King Indaka built a stupa at the spot where Buddha stood and gave his sermon and that is how this stupa was built. The stupa is said to enshrine Buddha's hair and drops of his sweat which had turned into pearls called the Mukthaka Dathu.
