Overview

When Buddha visited Sri Lanka for the third time during the eigth year of attaining enlightenment, he was invited by Deva King Indaka to visit Badulla. King Indaka built a stupa at the spot where Buddha stood and gave his sermon and that is how this stupa was built. The stupa is said to enshrine Buddha's hair and drops of his sweat which had turned into pearls called the Mukthaka Dathu.
The temple complex consists of 7 Bodhi trees out of which more have been destroyed some way or the another. Also, the temple has seen renovation multiple times, the last major renovation being in 1956. Since then, some minor work has been done towards upkeep and maintenance of the complex.
