With Pidurutalagala (tallest mountain in Sri Lanka) standing like a guard and tea plantations rolling down the hills, Nuwara Eliya is a picturesque town in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. During the Brtitish rule, this town was also known as Little England as it was used as a hill country retreat by the Britishers. Many buildings in the town represent the colonial architecture. During April, the whole town celebrates the Sinhalese and Tamil New Year. Peak Wilderness Sanctuary and Horton's Plains National Park are two of the three sites that come under the Central highlands of Sir Lanka and were declared as a World Heritage Site in 2010. Both of them are accessible from Nuwara Eliya.
