Located in the Kegalle district of Sri Lanka, this sanctuary was founded in 1975 to give protection and provide care of the orphan elephants in the jungle. This sanctuary is based on a 25 acre coconut plantation on the banks of the Maha Oya River. The breeding programme was introduced in 1982. The best time to visit the Orphanage is when the elephants are taken to the river for bathing, that is, at 1000hrs and 1400hrs. At present, it is home to 70 Asian elephants. One can pay and get to touch, feed or get a picture clicked with the elephants.
