Overview

Puri is a world famous tourist destination, chiefly because of the presence of ‘Lord of the Universe’ or ‘Lord Jagannath’ temple. Situated 62 km from Bhubaneshwar on the shores of Chandrabhaga Beach along the coast line of Bay of Bengal, Puri is recognized as an ideal religious and tourist centre.

Lord Jagannath temple dedicated to Lord Krishna houses wooden idols of Krishna, Subhadra and Balarama. The Rath Yatra Festival is carried out to take the three gods on procession in elaborately decorated chariots to the abode of Lord Krishna’s aunt, in Gundicha temple, for a week. This apart, Puri Beach festival, Ganesh Pooja and Jhulana Yatra are amongst other celebrated occasions. Other temples in Puri include Lokanath, Sunaragauranga, Daria Mahabir and Tota Gopinath. There are holy tanks like Narendra, Markandeya, Sweta Ganga and Indradyumna visited in large numbers by devotees throughout the year. Puri is well connected by roads from Bhubaneshwar and by rail (Puri Station).
