The Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is located at the banks of Kaveri River, 5 kms from Srirangapatna. The Sanctuary is spread over an area of 57 acres on small islands.
It is the nesting and breeding centre for all kinds of birds which include Kingfishers, Partridges, Egrets, River Terns, Stone Ploughers, Herons, Snake Birds, White Ibis, Cormorants, Darters, Open Billed Storks, Spoonbills, Open Bill Storks, and Dantes. The list of mammals at the Sanctuary includes Bonnet Macaques, Fruit Bats, Palm Civets, Mongooses, Otters and Marsh Crocodiles.
The Sanctuary also attracts a large number of migratory birds from as far as North America, Australia and Siberia. The islands can be reached by taking a boat. The best time of visit the island is from June to October. The river banks make the ideal place for a day picnic.
