The City of Gems, Ratnapura, is the capital of Ratnapura District and also the provincial capital of Sabaragamuwa. The economy of the town and the district is mainly dependent on the precious stone mining. The tea and rubber plantations not only add to the beauty of the town but also are a major industry. The drive through the paddy fields and the plantations is breath taking. The World Heritage Site of Sinharaja Forest Reserve is also located in the district of Ratnapura.
