The stupa also, known as the Mahathupa, Swarnamali Chaitya and Rathnamali Dagab, was built by King Dutugemunu. Known for its magnificent architecture, it is also the tallest monument in the world. It is sacred to all Buddhists and is one of the 8 places of veneration in Anuradhapura. Its walls are decorated with figures of elephants and compound supported by stone elephants.
