Sankar Gompa serves as the residence of the head priest - Kushak Bakula, the head of the Gelugpa Sect. The Monastery is 90 years old and has 25 lamas of the yellow-hat sect attached to it (though only a few live here permanently). The main gate leads to the courtyard. One one side are the stairs that lead to the Dukhang. The verandah has the wheel of life on one side and Old Man of Long Life on the other. The Dukhang walls have been done beautifully with paintings of the Buddha. Among the many images there are images of Avalokitesvara with 1000 arms and 11 heads and Tsong-kha-pa, founder of the yellow-hat sect of Buddhism and his two chief disciples.
