Overview

Jagannath, one of the most worshipped deities of Orissa is housed in Jagannath Temple in Puri. Anantavarman Chodaganga Dev began the construction of this temple followed by Ananga Bhima Deva who rebuilt it, to its present form. The temple spreads across an area of 4,00,000 sq. ft. and has a wall fortification of 20 ft height.

Jagannath refers to ‘Lord of the Universe’, the main deity in this temple being Lord Krishna. On a raised stone platform of 216 feet there are three deities namely Krishna, Balarama and Subhadra made in wood. Maharaja Ranjit Singh (Sikh Emperor) donated large amounts of wealth in the form of gold and the world famous Kohinoor diamond, which was seized by the British. ‘Rath Yatra’ is the most famous festival here and the three deities are carried on elaborately decorated chariots to Gundicha Temple. A large number of devotees and tourists visit Puri during Rath Yatra. Puri is well connected by road and rail to Bhubaneshwar and other important cities of India.
