A branch from the Bodhi Tree in Gaya, where Buddha attained enlightened, was brought to Anuradhapura by Princess Sanghamitta in 3rd century BC. It was planted here and has been protected ever since. It is said to be the oldest historical tree in the world. This is one of the most sacred sites for all the Buddhists. It is one of the Atamasthana, the 8 places of veneration.
