Being the largest single block of tidal, halophytic mangrove forest in the world, Sundarbans is one of India’s biggest tourist attractions. It is spread over regions of West Bengal and Bangladesh at the mouth of the river Ganges. The Sundarbans forest spans an area of 10,000 sq. km. with 6,000 sq. km. situated in Bangladesh. In accordance with its massive ground area and abundantly rich flora and fauna, Sundarbans was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.Apart from its vivid and enthralling vegetation, this luscious mangrove forest also houses varied species of animals. The most famous of these is the Royal Bengal Tiger. Spotted deer, crocodiles and a variety of birds also inhabit the area in plenty. The best time to visit Sundarbans is from November to February. At this time of the year, most animals can be easily spotted at watering holes, thus serving as every nature-lover’s idyll.

The West Bengal government offers lodging in the form of tourist rest houses and forest lodges in Sajnekhal, Bhakkali and Piyali. These areas are connected to Sundarbans through river routes. Cruise launches like MV Chitralekha and MV Sarbajaya also offer accommodation. The nearest railhead to Sundarbans is at Canning (48km). The capital of West Bengal, Kolkata, is linked to Namkhana, Sonakhali, Raidighi and Canning by easily accessible roadways. These places provide access to Sundarbans through various waterways. Kolkata itself is located 112 km away from Sundarbans. Resplendent in its natural beauty, this famous mangrove forest serves as an exciting learning experience as well as a perfect place to unwind and relax.
