It is the city capital of the Wangdue Phodrang district, both get their name from the Dzong built in 1638, which is the main attraction along with a small market which is established outside its gates. The district comprises of 15 gewogs (villages) offering you a glimpse of Bhutanese rural life. They offer an insight into the shaman culture and opportunity to see the ancestral home of Pema Tshewang Tashi, Lozeys or ornamental speeches are a part of every Bhutanese. Wangduephodrang Tsechu is the annual festival held in Autumn, it is a three day celebration which is famous for its the Raksha Mangcham or the dance of the Ox. The city is also known for its bamboo work and wood carvings.
