Established in 1973, Wayanad Wilflife Sanctuary on Wayanad plateau is adjoined by Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and Bandipur National Park. Spreading over 345 sq. km area, the sanctuary extends into two districts, Cannanore and Calicut. Also known as Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, it is a natural habitat for rich avian, floral and faunal population. Some of the frequently spotted creatures include leopard, deer, bison, monkey, peacock, woodpecker, etc amidst deciduous forests. Lying 16km east of Sultan Bathery, June to October is the best time to catch glimpse of a wide range of species in the sanctuary.
