West Bengal is a state in East India. It is surrounded by Bihar, Orissa, Bangladesh and Bay of Bengal. The British established a stronghold in West Bengal in year 1757 after the Battle of Plassey and the city of Calcutta (known as Kolkata now a days) served as the capital of the Empire. After Independence Bengal was divided into West Bengal, which became a part of India and East Bengal which was initially a part of Pakistan, but after the 1971 Indo-Pak became Bangladesh, a seperate country. Many renowned freedom fighters, academicians and philophoners were born in Bengal.
For a tourist the main attractions in West Bengal would be Sunderbans- a wildlife sanctuary, Darjeeling - a fantastic hill station and Kolkata - having a large number of historical monuments
